Spanish
At Castle Academy, we study Spanish in KS2. Studying a language in a primary school is hugely important for the children as it enables them to communicate with others across the world and better understand the cultures that exist in other countries.
Spanish is introduced to the children in Year 3 and above and is taught in weekly 45 minute lessons which involve speaking, listening, reading and writing.
We aim to give the children a fun and exciting introduction to foreign languages and have chosen Language Angels to help us deliver our lessons. Using the Language Angels scheme allows us to ensure adequate progression and good curriculum coverage.
The key areas of learning cover:
- Phonics – understanding the relationship between the sounds and letters
- The foundations of grammar including the gender of words
- Vocabulary and applying it in different situations
- Listening and reading to get the general sense of the meaning
- Speaking with correct pronunciation and noticing punctuation when written.
The main themes of our Spanish Curriculum are:
- Me, my family and friends
- School life and daily routines
- Hobbies and interests
- The world around us
- Culture, food and history
