Geography
"Geography is a subject which holds the key to our future." Michael Palin
At Castle Academy, we have learners from all around the world. We aim to instil a curiosity for the world and celebrate how wonderful it is. We want to equip our pupils with knowledge about a diverse range of places, people and environments. Pupils look at how the world around us is ever-changing, through both physical and human interactions.
Over the course of a child’s time at Castle Academy, they will experience a wide range of geographical concepts:
Our geography curriculum has been developed collaboratively by the geography leaders from across our family of schools; EMAT. This has been done to use their expertise of teaching children of different ages to create a curriculum that builds on a child’s understanding of geography each year.
This is our current structure of our units for each year:
Each unit focuses on a key enquiry question. For example, in the Year 6 unit Climate Change, the key enquiry question is ‘What positive actions can be taken to address climate change?’. Each lesson is built around another question which will all contribute to answering the final question.
We use a wide range resources to help promote this curiosity. Maps, both physical and using the online mapping software Digimaps for Schools, help secure an understanding of place, landscapes and how it is changing. Representations and diagrams help the children to understand a wide range of geographical processes.
