Eco-Committee

At Castle Academy we are at the beginning of our eco journey and are learning new things each time we meet.

We currently have 24 pupils and one staff member on our Eco Committee who meet once a fortnight to discuss our concerns. We then take our concerns and plan projects to help improve our school and wider community environment.

Last year we gained our first Eco Schools Green Flag Award to recognise the effort and progress the eco committee had made throughout the year. To gain this award in our first year was a great achievement that we are very proud of.

This year we are back with a bang and have already begun to work on selecting projects to raising awareness of eco issues such as littering, developing our eco areas in school and limiting the use of single use plastics.

Recycle Week 2024

This week committee members from year 6 lead an assembly on Recycle Week. The committee wanted to raise awareness of single use plastics and how through littering they can end up in rivers and oceans. They shared a video from the BBC Teach website that highlights this as a global issue with rubbish being found in our oceans around the world.

When investigating single use plastic the committee found that single use plastics are harder to recycle and can not be placed into the usual recycling box at home. To help the issue of plastic pollution the committee then set the school a challenge of collecting their single use plastic wrappers to be taken to a special collection point and recycled.

If you would like to learn more please follow the link below that includes the video we shared with the school.

Eco Committee Litter picking project.

This year our Eco committee representatives from year 4 and 5 have embarked on a litter picking project to build on our achievements from last year. After hearing about letters our pupils sent to our local MP to raise awareness of littering around our school site and in our community, Becky Carrier from the Northamptonshire film project approached us for help to create a film with littering at its heart. Becky had a vision to make a film about litter heroes and recognise the work they do to help keep our communities clean. This project will last for the next few months and will see our Eco committee members working with Becky to build a film concept and actually create a short film that can be shown at the next Northamptonshire Film Festival. They started this journey in October by thinking about what makes someone a litter hero and finding candidates that deserve recognition for the hard work they do.

We look forward to sharing with you more on the exciting work this project is doing over the coming months.
