Covid-19 - parent info

Year 2

Hello clipart greetings 3

Hello Year 2 Pupils and Parents!

We hope you are all well and are staying safe. We will be posting lots of ideas and work for you to complete at home over the next few weeks.

Parents, please do not worry if your child is struggling to complete the work; they can always ask you for help or complete some work from the Year 1 page if this is more appropriate!

You know your child best so do what is best for them!

Miss Scanlan and Mrs Johnson :-)

WEEKLY EMAIL TASK W/B: 01.06.20

Every week we are going to set up one task that we would like you to submit to us via email. This week we would like you to complete a task based on the picture below.

                                                    Email task week 9

Discuss the following questions with a family member:

  • Who is the girl in the picture?
  • Where has she come from?
  • What stories have been told in her village for centuries?
  • What do you think she hopes will be inside the house?
  • What will she actually find inside?
  • Why is she all alone?
  • What are the golden specks of light that appear at the front of the picture?
  • How has the girl found this place?

Now draw and write a description of what it is like inside the house. Think about:

  • What does the girl see as she enters?
  • What can she hear?
  • What can she feel?
  • What can she smell?
  • How does she feel?

Remember to use all your super descriptive tools such as adjectives, commas in a list, similes and punctuation.

Email your responses to 2PS@castle.emat.uk (Miss Scanlan's class) or 2IJ@castle.emat.uk (Mrs Johnson's class) with your child's name clearly stated. Parents, if your child struggles to write the reply, please ask them for their ideas and type them yourselves. Thank you!

 WEEKLY LEARNING GRIDS

Every week we will post 5 activities for English, Maths and Curriculum, one for each day of the week. It does not matter which order you complete the activities in. Record them in your yellow home learning book. We would love to see pictures or examples of any work you have completed at home-please email these to 2PS@castle.emat.uk (Miss Scanlan's class) or 2IJ@castle.emat.uk (Mrs Johnson's class). Please also spend some time on Bug Club and Sumdog. Your teachers are monitoring your use of these websites!

English W/B: 01.06.20

Activity 1

Complete the appropriate reading comprehension for your Phonics or book talk group. Read the text carefully then answer the questions in your yellow home learning book. These documents can be found in the documents section at the bottom of the page.

Mrs Johnson’s book talk group, you have a comprehension called ‘Abandoned’

Mr Kirton’s book talk group, you have a comprehension based on a famous Australian tale.

Children in any Phonics group, you have a comprehension all about Parts of a Plant.

If you are finding the text challenging to read, you can always read it with a grown-up and answer the questions together.

Activity 2

It is important to develop a love of books. This week we would like you to spend some time on Bug Club.

We would like you to answer at least 5 quiz questions based on the books you have read, by clicking on the bug symbol.

Don’t forget your teacher’s can see your answers so make sure you think carefully before answering each question. We cannot wait to see your answers!

                                         Bugclub picture

 Activity 3

We have been practising lots of different spellings over the last few weeks. This week we would like you to have a go at correctly someone else’s spellings.

Mr Whoops is a little clumsy and often makes silly spelling mistakes. We would like you to read through his writing and highlight or underline the incorrect spellings. Once you have done this, have a go at correcting his spellings and making a list of words Mr Whoops needs to practise. You can either complete this straight onto the sheet or copy the text into your home learning book.

                                      Mr Whoops activity 3

Activity 4

Complete the SpaG activity on the prefix ‘un’.

Prefixes are a group of letters that change the meaning of a word when they are added to the start. Most prefixes mean a similar thing when they're added to different words.

The prefix ‘un’ usually means not.

Read the sentences on the sheet and choose which word needs the prefix ‘un’ added to complete the sentence. Copy the sentences into your home learning book, writing the new word on the line.

Challenge: Can you think of anymore words with the prefix ‘un’? Now write a sentence using each new word.

                                          Prefix activity 4

Activity 5

Look carefully at this picture. You will be using this to help with your writing today.

                                              Picture prompt activity 5

Before you start, discuss these questions with a family member:

  • What is a dare?
  • Who has dared the boy to camp in the woods?
  • Who is the boy?
  • Why have they dared him to venture into the woods?
  • What do you know about him/what can you guess about his character?
  • Why has he chosen to camp out in the woods?
  • Has anything happened during the night?
  • What will happen when he leaves the tent?

Now use your senses to describe what it is like to be in the woods. Think about:

  • What can you see?
  • What can you smell?
  • What can you hear?
  • How do you feel?

Remember to use all your descriptive tools such as adjectives, commas in a list, similes and punctuation.

If you find this tricky, then draw a picture of what might happen in the woods and write a sentence saying what is happening. Remember to use an adjective.

This is a checklist for you to help you make sure your writing is the best it can be!

Look carefully at yourself in the mirror. Now use materials you have at home, such as pencils, pencil crayons, felt tips, paints or anything else you may have to create your self-portrait.

Try to make it as life-like as you can. Do not give yourself purple hair unless you have purple hair!

We would love to see some of your fabulous artwork. You can email these to your child’s class teacher- 2PS@castle.emat.uk (Miss Scanlan’s class) or 2IJ@castle.emat.uk (Mrs Johnson’s class). We cannot wait to see your fabulous work!

                                                       Self portrait activity 4

Activity 5

It is important to think about our wellbeing during this difficult time. We would like you think of something you have done that you are proud of over the week. This could be a piece of school work or something you have done at home, such as helping someone else, a drawing or something you have made.

We would like you to draw or take a photo of the thing you are proud of and write a short paragraph saying what it is you are proud of and why it makes you proud.

Here is a checklist for you to help you make sure your writing is the best it can be!
